“The Eastern sky was all grey blue — bunches of clouds — different kinds of clouds — sticking around everywhere and the whole thing — lit up — first in one place — then in another with flashes of lightning — sometimes just sheet lightning — and sometimes sheet lightning with a sharp bright zigzag flashing across it – I walked out past the last house — past the last locust tree — and sat on the fence for a long time — looking — just looking at — the lightning — you see there was nothing but sky and flat prairie land — land that seems more like the ocean than anything else I know — There was a wonderful moon.”
With this season the sky has opened again to our view. The luscious clouds lazing around pester the blue in long, thin lines of white. We have removed the opaque sheet of winter and gaze longingly at the orbs which transfer days across time. Thank the heavens, summer is here (or at least right around the corner)!
You are called now to the rivers, to the grass, to the back patios and barbecues and gardens of the season. You collect, inherit really, all the inspiration this world has to offer. In a Christmas essay from 1968, written after we had our first glimpse of that pale, blue dot we call home, the poet Archibald MacLeish wrote, “To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue and beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see ourselves as riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold -- brothers who know now they are truly brothers.”
We are so excited to announce a new initiative from Monolight. The Small Press Club is a quarterly collaboration with small presses around the world. Each season will feature 3-4 books within that season's theme. This summer we look to the sky, as Georgia O'Keeffe did on that stormy afternoon. Our aim is to serve as an impetus for actionable creativity in your modern life. These books and the ones which will follow are carefully selected to inspire, engage, and enlighten.
Ordering runs the month of May, with your set arriving approximately June 21st. Join for a season at $50 per set or join for a whole year at a discounted rate of $175.
The Summer 2019 bundle begs its audience to look outside themselves and consider the world around them. As the change of season creeps in through the fields and forests, popping buds into full-fledged flowers and leaves, your opportunity to engage with your senses has never been stronger. Try creating not in a straight line from idea to process to art, but in a circle. With this bundle we ask: what are your creative cycles, where do circles appear when you expected straight lines, how do you feel most inspired, when do you feel your most authentic self?
